The “Wreck-It Ralph” Sequel Got in Trouble for Lightening the Skin of the Black Disney Princess

Disney has one, count ’em, ONE black princess, and THIS is how they treat her?  There’s a scene in the “Wreck-It Ralph” sequel, “Ralph Breaks the Internet”, where Sarah Silverman’s character Vanellope runs into several Disney princesses.

But when trailers started coming out, people noticed that Tiana has lighter skin and a less ethnic look overall than she did in “The Princess and the Frog”.  They complained, and Disney listened.

An advocacy group called Color of Change says Disney agreed to restore Tiana to, “an unapologetically Black princess with full lips, dark skin and dark hair.”

And they called it a victory for “black children and their parents, and black audiences who want to see the variety of shades, shapes and sizes of black characters accurately represented in the arts.”
